All The Crayons

 The number of my brain cells killed due to cleaning fumes is directly proportional to the number of spots I cleaned out of the carpet. Still looks old and torn, but it's clean and it works. Painting remains to be done on the house and several other repair jobs are still slated, but the photo editor doesn't have fumes so it is my go to toy right now.

This summer has a visual focus and it is satisfying to be able do something that creates a change in the original.  Certainly, completing my humdrum chores is not going to produce any significant change. Such are the dubious benefits of home ownership.

But the toys are my new crayons and my tendency to use all of them has not faded since the days when I tried to eat them. (Evidence below.)

Portrait #3

Becoming tired of using images of myself, I went to the FB and took screen shots of friends. I thought of giving these people the portraits I've made and will make, but it might come off too weird. Receiving an edited picture of yourself could be construed in all kinds of negative ways that are far more interesting than the truth. The pictures are starting points for exploration, like canvas,  and not the stuff of stalkietown.

The photo above is of a male friend who would not think my playing with it in the editor was any more weird than anything else he's known me to do. Still, I doubt he would recognize himself.  The two below are of me and share very little resemblance to the original.  The original is tired and torn but she's clean and she works well.

Portrait #2

Portrait #1

Not everything I have been making is so abstract, but the abstract ones are safer to post. Can you imagine coming to a blog and seeing a photo of yourself all edited and alien looking? It would make me feel odd.

Oh yeah, I made a vid on the fly for the fourth of July:

My apologies to anyone who has seen this stuff before as all but the first photo here has been posted elsewhere.  Have a good week please.

No matter what color crayon is used, the key to quick recognition is based upon the configuration of the facial features, especially the relationship between eyes, mouth, etc. That is the way police are now able to identify individuals on city streets by survailance camera wed to supercomputer.  The theory of how humans recognize each other, too.  I have seen none of these before, but instantly saw you in Portrait # 1.  Number two gave me problems, as I did not "recognize" any feature, then read why; I do not know the person.  Portrait #3 was more difficult, but upon finding eyes, the ID was again quick. I do like #1 for this season.  Portrait #2 signals gravitas, good for another season, perhaps.

Fun!  I would think that the only artistic rendition of a photo given to the subject by an artist that might be construed in a negative way would be a caricature.  Perhaps I missed something at this early hour.......

These pictures are so cool. It doesn't matter who they are just that they make a wonderful abstract conposition. The watercolors seem to be calling me. I got a 2010 calendar with flowers and one looks very interesting.

Crayon story.
When I was in elementary school, my folks were too cheap to buy me real Crayola Crayons.
So they got some cheap equivalent brand of 128 colors for me instead.
I was so heartbroken at first.
I discovered the cheap crayons actually melted and became moldable just from the heat of your hand.

Soon my box of crayons became the most heavily coveted items in my class,
Because I had, not crayons like everyone else,
But modeling wax you could make into figures,
And THEN color with them!

Checked back to see if what I said late last night made any sense today.  Too many words!  Ah, the smell of a fresh box of Crayolas. Probably was as toxic as well as intoxicating; likely changed today.

Face recognition is a very cool thing to study.
It has to do with things like a baby recognizing its mom, or picking a person out of a police lineup, to being started by your own reflection in a mirror just after a new haircut, among lots of other things....

Imagine this (the inverse), taking a random picture, and tweaking it enough to make it actually look like some recognizable person.

Fillup should join forces with my younger son. He loves to blow things up I admit I have encouraged this behavior, starting when he was a little kid and we beta-tested an activity book for the Exploratorium, with lots of exploding experiments.

Hope you're having a super week!

I never understood why kids eat crayons. It didn't do anything for me. I would understand if you played with a photo of me, because I understand that people get toys and play with them. I don't think it's stalkerish. I can see where other people might think that though.

@thinlizzy17 -

It's not the eating, it's the teething. Wax is very good for teething. Kids who eat them after that have food issues I'd guess.

@the_plainsman -

Reading that made me start to play with the feature that allows me to reshape things. Thanks for the idea!

Btw, I think I will end up painting my whole house. Your chores are contagious!

I loved doing that. Didn't learn it until after girl scouts had us do the melting thing with irons though.

I was not sure if that feature was available, but was sure you would look for, and try it!  Now you will be able to distill images down to their essence and re-mix!  As to your house, besides getting a needed job done, it is wonderfully satisfying, too.  I think those eating crayons must be related to those who ate paste and clay...that is just taking enjoyable things one step too far.

I ,as you know ,adore doing things to faces, and I love the way your images remind me of what in my youth we who tried valiantly to be spiritually advanced imagined an aura might look. I notice the color first and then the eyes and then its all about the whole.I flash back to an earnest fellow telling me my aura was purple.Anyway these are wonderful.
